Secret Truths Pt.1
The N original series South of Nowhere opens by voice over, where we're introduced to Spencer Carlin, the youngest of three Carlin children who've recently moved to Los Angeles from "small-town Ohio". The kids, Glen (the eldest), Spencer, and Clay engage in playful banter, bumping into a few other characters before the bell rings and Spencer realizes she still doesn't know her way around. Enter a brunette, a moody brunette, who offers our poor girl little help before stomping off in a huff.
Moving on, Spencer's a cheerleader, or was a cheerleader and is trying to still be a cheerleader, and in order to do that she has to make nice with Madison, a girl who totally knows what she wants. And what she wants is for Spencer's big bro Glen to stay out of the way of her honey Aiden's "8 figure deal". Apparently, the boys are gonna be battling it out on the basketball court for the same position. Spencer's taken aback, as am I. She's past gold-digger at 16. She's already at platinum-digger status.
Clay's having a tough time with the registrar's office. Seems they've flubbed up his classes and he can't take AP Physics. And instead of being excited about it like a normal person, he's devastated.
While Glen's showing up Aiden on the basketball court, the moody brunette
makes another appearance, this time approaching Spencer and not biting her
head off. Spencer's as confused by her behavior as I am but the girl's quite
charming and disarming when she's not growling and they quickly fall into
cute conversation. Her name is Ashley
Davies and after what some might consider some mild flirting, she invites
Spencer out on the town. An offer the girl would not refuse.

After a brief montage, we find the girls at home, Ashley's home a.k.a. mansion a.k.a. estate. They're watching the Real World and like real life that always dissolves into a discussion about why boys are so annoying. At least, that's the way it always happens for me. The girls tick of several points of agreement, but what's most telling is Ashley's final statement, "It's a good thing that they're not the only choice." Her hand coincidentally finds Spencer and the seed has been planted. Uh, did Ashley not know that Spencer was from "small-town"' Ohio?

Finally, we meet the Carlin children's parents as they all gather for dinner. There's Arthur, the social worker father, and Paula, the emergency room doctor. And amidst the children and parents telling about their days and such, and Glen emphasizing how hot Spencer's new friend Ashley is, we learn that the Carlins are a devoutly Christian family, evidence by the praying.
The next day at school, Clay's in class being inattentive and the teacher calls him on it. Sean, the black kid who's been mildly hassling Clay shines where Clay couldn't and it leaves the precocious Carlin perplexed. Explains why in a daze he bumps into a girl in the hallway named Chelsea and sparks fly, then fists as Chelsea's boyfriend shows up (although whoa, don't think we should call him a boy) and proceeds to kick the crap out of Clay. He's having a tough time in LA but something tells me this is only the beginning.

Spencer bumps in Madison again who clings to Aiden like a life preserver. They chat a while, both making some rather suggestive comments to Spencer, before Madison informs Spencer that she has to attend the dance they have to commemorate the tip-off of the school's basketball season. Then Ashley shows up and asks Spencer where's she's been all day (because the blonde, although I hadn't mentioned it before) was avoiding her. Spencer's plays it down but Ashley's not too concerned. She's more concerned with who the blonde is currently chatting it up with. There's some bad blood between Madison and Ashley it seems, especially when Madison insinuates Ashley's a slut and Ashley just comes right out and calls the Latina a bitch. Aiden diffuses the situation and Madison walks away but not before cautioning Spencer about her choice of friends.
Spencer has a brain, and her brain picked up on a vibe, not between Ashley and Madison though, but between Ashley and Aiden. The brunette skirts the question though and instead intends to make Spencer suffer by bringing up the "gay thing". She knows Spencer's weirded out, even if the blonde denies it. Still, the weirdness is not enough of a cause for them to stop being friends. And is also not enough to make Spencer not stare at Ashley as she walks away. Aww.
Glen's coach tells him that he's gonna get the start, which the Ohioan is
more than stoked about.
Spencer's having a dream -- no, nightmare. And in it, Madison and the other
cheer-bitches (as Ashley so affectionately calls them) are insisting that
she's gay and when Spencer seeks solace or rather help in her new-found friend,
dream-Ashley walks away with dream-Aiden. She wakes then. I don't blame her.
That's enough to make anyone break out into a cold sweat.

Secret Truths Pt.2
The second part of the one hour series premiere picks up right where the last part left off, or at least the next day. Spencer appears to have processed her nightmare somewhat and decides to go get some advice from her dad. She feels conflicted. "What if being myself isn't what people expect of me?" Nice question, but Pops has a better answer. "That's what makes people great: the unexpected." Hmm agreed.
Clay's just walking around campus, and this time he's managed to avoid people and fists. The universe awards him for his good deeds, as Sean pops up and decides to offer him a ride home. He hesitantly hops in with Sean and his cousin Boz, then, they're off.
Ashley and Spencer (Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?) are also walking, and Ashley breaks news of Clay's fight to the blonde. Seems, Clay didn't mention it. Odd. What's even more odd is this vibe between Aiden and Ashley. He passes them in the hallway and the two share a look of sorts. Spencer asks Ashley what's up but she gives her the brush off again saying that the two knew each other once, possibly intimately. Spencer's right to look confused. Ashley's parting comment after Spencer tells her that a phase is not defined by who you wake up next to leaves even the best of us to shake our heads and ponder. "Well, I don't know who that is. I just know who it's not." *scratches head* Wonder what that's about.
Sean and Boz are taking Clay home and we get Sean's perspective on America and how society treats the black man. He makes some interesting points and so does Clay, and the simple fact that they can communicate like this and on such a level lets you know that they're gonna be great friends.
Spencer's grooving with the rest of the cheerleaders and Ashley comes in and they share a cute look. Spencer's doing a good job and is on a fast track to actually making the squad. The boys are busy busting moves too, only their playing basketball, and this time Aiden is taking it to Glen, a fact he doesn't fail to emphasize to Glen. In the boy's locker-room, Glen gets a little back-story on Ashley. You know that she used to date Aiden and that he "turned" her gay. Now it's Glen's turn to rub it in. He gets in Aiden's face and they shove each other a bit before Coach breaks it up.

But it doesn't stop there, Glen high-tails it home and shares his newfound knowledge with the rest of the Carlins to mixed results: Spencer refutes it, Paula discourages it, Arthur defends it, and Clay's well, Clay's not there. Oh yeah, he's being accosted by the LAPD.

More on that later. Paula, after a little more convincing
from Glen decides that maybe Spencer shouldn't be hanging out with Ashley,
but Arthur sticks to his guns and decides that "sexual orientation"
shouldn't be a determining factor for making friends.
They agree to disagree but Spencer gets to keep her friend. Yay!
Okay, back to Clay. So, since he was driving at night with Sean and Boz the cops stopped them, cuffed them, roughed them up, and then let them go. It's Clay's first experience like that and it leaves him visibly shaken. It doesn't get better when he tried to recount his tale at home and is not met with the kind of reaction he'd probably hoped for. Apparently, "driving while black" is not something the rest of the
Carlin clan can relate to. Uh, you think?
It's game and dance night. The game's on the line, and instead of going to his apparent mainstay Aiden, Coach turns to the new guy Glen to make the shot. A "money player" in his own opinion, Glen, of course, drills the shot, securing his title as the boy's star point guard. Madison didn't like that. But she's a cheerleader. Aren't they supposed to look happy, like, all the time? Bad Madison.
Game over and it's time to dance. Spencer's been forced to attend so she's there and bored. And since her main squeeze, I mean, new buddy doesn't like dances, she's alone. But not for long, she goes outside to call Ashley and beg her to come to the dance, although it doesn't take much convincing.
Clay, who's had the hardest time thus far at King High, is finally about to catch a break. Sean, his new homie, squares away the beef with Dallas, the guy who stomped him just days before. And, to make everything just a little bit sweeter, he finally gets to talk to Chelsea, or his rendition of talking anyway.

Spencer's still outside, presumably waiting for Ashley, who finally shows looking nervous and anxious and incredibly stunning. Spencer's not too bad to look at either. These two are just beyond cute, and it gets even cuter when Spencer asks Ashley if she's nervous. The always calm, cool, and collected brunette admits that she is, and instead of replying Spencer offers her her hand to hold. Aww.

Aiden's being chewed out by Madison for being showed up by the new guy. She just doesn't roll with second place guys and when he leers at Spencer or Ashley, not really sure, she gets even more ticked, telling him that she's "nobody's second choice."
The other girls who maybe kinda look sorta couple-y are testing the waters and right when Ashley's about to loosen up here comes the piran- I mean, Latina, Madison. Instead of just going after Ashley though, she directs her hurtful words towards Spencer, alleging that the girl is gay, or must be gay for hanging out with Ashley, and that if she is, she's not welcome on the squad. And when Ashley tries to defend her friend, Madison gets vicious; spilling the secret that Ashley got pregnant by Aiden and got rid of the baby. The first part's accurate, but Aiden clears it up. They didn't get rid of it, they lost it. Madison's clearly shocked by that news, but she takes her foot out of her mouth long enough to kick Spencer off the squad.
Glen's big brother radar kicked in somewhere around the time that Madison told her to go play with her life partner and he decides it's time for them to go home but she doesn't want to. She's leaving with Ashley. And when he tires to make her Aiden steps up. Those two already can't stand each other and with tensions raised it finally comes to a head and they fight, Clay having to forcefully pull his brother off of Aiden.
Spencer and Ashley flee the scene of the crime, taking Aiden
with them, and end up at some place that looks suspiciously like a make-out
point. Wherever they are, they're overlooking the city of Los Angeles, and
recapping the night's events.

Aiden apologizes for how crazy things got but Ashley seems more than eager to put it all behind her. They both look uneasy when Spencer asks them if they need a minute alone, but when Aiden repeats the same question to the girls, they decline even though it's clear they both don't want to. Instead, Ashley decides the night is young, and there's plenty more madness to dive into. That is, if they're game. Aiden's all for it, and Spencer Spencer's ready to "hit the madness".
Friends, Lovers, Brothers and Others
We're in the quad, and now we have a clear view of the different cliques. Madison and Glen are with the popular people, Aiden lingers on the outskirts. Sean is with his cousin and friends. And Ashley and Spencer are with Ashley and Spencer. You know, I think I prefer it that way. Clay makes an appearance and is beckoned by both Sean and Glen, in which, he chooses to go validate some story his brother was telling, leaving Sean and Co. with a bad taste in their mouths.
Aiden, sick of being ignored or sick of watching his girlfriend flirt with the competition, decides to join Spencer and Ashley. I'm glad but only because we can finally hear what they're talking about. Ashley's got a gig, that they're invited to, and her dad's gonna be in attendance. Her ROCK STAR dad that is. She's geeked, Spencer's geeked, and Aiden thinks they're both adorable if his smile is any indication.

Spencer and Ashley are back at Ashley's place after the break where Ashley's trying to decide on an outfit to wear for her performance. But it pretty quickly breaks down into how Ashley feels about her dad, who's been pretty absent in her life, and is just now trying to make an effort to get involved. Of course, the optimist in Spencer tells the girl that this is a good thing, but Ashley looks a little wary.
Clay and Glen are at home playing video games where Glen finally expresses his unease with Clay's new friends. Clay just lays it out for him. Basically, Glen's entitled to his opinions, but he's still gonna hang out with Sean.
Aiden, Spencer, and Ashley are finalizing their plans for Friday night, the night of Ashley's gig when Madison shows up to steal him away. But not before trading a few quips:
Madison: "Bite me queer eye."
Ashley: "Not if you were the last Barbie on earth."
But Madison doesn't stay long. She has to discuss her plans with Aiden for Friday night, which, aren't gonna work for him. She correctly guesses that he's gonna be with the Ellen Twins and lets him know that he doesn't have to be the only guy for her, but he doesn't seem to upset about that.
Clay tries to strike up a conversation with Sean, but Sean's
not being too receptive. He keeps making comments that seem to be suggesting
that Clay doesn't really want to hang with them. Of course, we know what it's
about. But Clay's a little slow on the uptake and doesn't get that they're
still miffed about him choosing the go to Glen's table the other day.

Glen and Madison bump into each other, and it's the prefect opportunity for her to make her move and make good on her threat to Aiden. She's gonna give Glen a shot.
Finally, we're at Gray, the site of Ashley's gig. Aiden and
Spencer show up and Ashley's all smiles, Spencer, too, as she checks Ashley
out - Ashley's outfit out. Aiden tried to score he and Spencer drinks, but
he fails, miserably. Thank goodness Ashley is there with her personal stash
and she spikes Spencer's drink with something out of her flask. I don't think
she intended for this to happen though.

So, Glen and Madison are at Glen's house. She's meeting the parents. That's how Glen gets the girl *crickets* That is one strange dude. Clay suffers through the third degree before being allowed to go hang with Sean.
Back at Gray, Spencer's hitting Ashley's flask hard. Actually,
she's emptied it and it's definitely affecting her behavior. She proceeds
to kiss Aiden as Ashley looks on, not amused. Uh oh. The brunette walks over
and separates them and upon seeing Ashley, Spencer dissolves into senseless
prattle. Or rather, she uses the word awesome a lot. Ashley's had enough,
she needs to talk to Spencer alone, drunk or not. She drags her to what must
be a dressing room where Spencer appears to drunkenly make a move on Ashley.

But the brunette's not having it or letting her off the hook. She's upset because the roles are reversed and if Spencer was a true friend she would be more supportive of her, especially since Ashley's dad hasn't shown. Spencer still has enough lucidity to reassure her, telling Ashley that her dad will show up and that she's gonna be great. Then she kisses her on the cheek. But even after all of that Spencer still leaves with Aiden, before Ashley performs.
Clay finally makes it to Sean's party where Sean lets him know how he feels. Clay contends that Sean's making him choose between making new friends and his family. Sean contends that it's the same kind of situation for him. He just wants Clay to be more aware of how his actions may affect other people, other African-American people, and that stuff like that is important in a city like Los Angeles.
Ashley takes the stage and Spencer and Aiden are no where
to be found, and, *tear* she even dedicates the song to her "two friends
who are always there for me." Cut to her two best friends who are getting
hot and heavy in Aiden's car. Aiden, who must be a pretty sweet guy, stops
to ask Spencer if she really wants to do anything because he knows she's drunk
(and probably has seen the looks she's been giving Ashley). But she just pulls
open her blouse in response and he forgets any and all questions. But, before
they can go any farther, Spencer passes out.

Aiden is practically carrying a stumbling Spencer into her house. I don't know how he roused her, but as they walk into the living room, they stumble upon Madison and Glen who were obviously about to do something scandalous. Glen forgets that he was just mounting the guy's girlfriend and goes off on Aiden, asking him what'd he do to Spencer. Uh, hello, Glen. She's wasted. The kids, the dumb kids, get kind of loud and wake up Mama and Papa Carlin who immediately go into interrogation mode.
And, just when
Spencer's about to deny that she's drunk, she throws up, all over they hardwood floors. Ugh.
At Gray, Ashley was sulking, rightfully so. Dad didn't show,
friends missed her performance. What a sucky night. But here comes dad jogging
up now, his hair all white and standing on end like he stuck his finger into
an electric socket. He's all apologies and blaming management but Ashley's
used to the "song and dance" too. Still, Ashley's dad is persistent
and promises that he'll start being there for her. And, to soothe tonight's
wound, he wants Ashley to sing that song while he plays. It's actually a cute
little father daughter moment and I hope this is just the beginning of good
news for her.

The weekend's over and now everyone is back at school. Clay's hanging out with his friends. Madison and Glen are official. And Spencer and Ashley are apart. Before Spencer can go and tackle that though she has to clear things up with Aiden. Make sure things aren't weird between them. They're not in case you're wondering but they are with Ashley, which is who Spencer makes it over to next. Ashley's pretty aloof at first glance but it doesn't take long for Spencer to get back in her good graces, even if she's on probation. I'm just glad the girls are back on track.

Put Out or Get Out
Clay and Spencer (oh yeah, I forget that they're related sometimes and should hang out occasionally) are at some club. A club where they can't get service, and for once their mistreatment isn't because of Clay's skin color. It's just because Spencer doesn't have her "goodies" on display. Enter Kelly, who has not so discreetly been checking Spencer out from across the room. Spencer's oblivious that the girl is flirting with her carries on with conversation as if it's just casual, and Clay, also oblivious, keeps trying to interact with Kelly to no avail. Those Carlin kids need to get a clue.
Ashley's full of them though and breaks the news to Spencer the next day at school. Uh, duh, Spencer. Kelly's gay and probably wants to kiss you. Spencer doesn't believe her though. She's stubborn like that. Remember, this is the same girl that denied Ashley was gay even though she'd practically heard it from the girl's own mouth. Their conversation, teetering on the edge of something very interesting, is interrupted by Ashley's MOM. Whoa, Ashley has a mom. It's technically been three episodes already, where's she been? She answers my question with her request for Ashley though. She needs her out of the house tonight. She's entertaining and her guest doesn't know that she has a teenage daughter. Oh, I just love her.

And, look, Ashley's thinking the same thing.
Kelly shows up after school (??) and offers Spencer a ride, and waves awkwardly at a still clueless Clay. Speaking of clueless, Spencer is psyched about getting a ride in Kelly's convertible. So, she likes cars? Interesting. But still doesn't clue in to the Kelster, even when she asks the girl to go topless and Kelly proceeds to lift off her shirt. Oh, that Kelly. She's a rambunctious one isn't she? And she suckers Spencer into a date.

Aiden and Glen are still in each other's grills. It's not hard to see why. Glen stole his starting spot and his girlfriend. I'd be ready to kick butt too. But Madison is all about sportsmanship and decides that enough is enough. She's gonna have a little chat with a boys and put and end to this feud once and for all.
Ashley's at the beach talking to Spencer who's wearing a towel. Wait. That's a bit misleading. They're on the phone and Spencer's at home wearing a towel, trying to figure out what to wear tonight on her date. Only, she doesn't call it a date. In her mind it isn't one and it's something Ashley is relentless in teasing her about. I digress, it turns out Ashley can't stay at her dad's house as planned and she quickly declines any offers to join Spencer on her date. Instead, she'll stay over at Spencer's place that way they can dish afterwards even if Spencer contends that there's nothing to dish about because it isn't a date.
Back at Spencer's house, she's getting dressed while Ashley is reclined in
her bed, casually flipping through some magazine. Of course Paula chooses
this exact moment to walk into the bedroom and freak out, albeit in her calm
collected way. But you can tell the wheels are definitely turning.

She leaves them alone though, thinking better of leaving the door closed, and the girls commence to giggle at the absurdity of it all. Now, who's in denial? But Ashley's not done teasing Spencer about her "date". I wonder how long she's gonna pretend to be okay with this. I mean, I kinda got the vibe that she liked Spencer and now Spencer's going out with another girl? Especially when Spencer's dressing up like this is a date and putting on shoes she knows hurt her feet and are "the last thing any cute boys are gonna notice". Got you there Spence, but she just shuts her up by smacking her with a pillow. Sigh. I heart them.
Aiden and Glen stagger out of the gym together, both gloating. Seems Aiden's
going home with Madison. But wait a minute; Glen was supposed to be going
with Madison. Uh oh. Loca's at it again. The girl left them both stranded
with no way to get home.
This could backfire though Madison. They might bond and conspire to get revenge on you.
Kelly's arrived and Spencer and Ashley are still going back and forth about this date, but one look at Kelly and you now know for sure. Spencer Carlin, you are indeed about to go on a date with a girl. Paula, more than eager, to separate Spencer and Ashley practically shoves her daughter out of the door, or maybe Spencer just realizes a pending disaster when she sees one. Any more probing questions and Kelly might just let slip that she wants to make out with their daughter.
With Spencer not in the way as a filter, Ashley's subjected to the Carlins
full blast or vice versa. And Paula has just asked her to say grace. Ashley?
Grace? Try not to laugh there folks but it looks and sounds as funny as it
is written. She stumbles through it though and is finally permitted to chow
down. But with awkward company comes awkward conversation and very blunt questions.
Like, "Isn't it weird being black growing up in an all-white family?"
Why thank you Ashley? I've wanted to ask him that for a while now. But the
question's not nearly as funny as Clay's face.
Back to Kelly and Spencer, who are dancing, slow dancing until Spencer decides to play a game of hide and go seek, or at lest that's what Kelly thinks as the girl runs into the bathroom. It's actually a game of hide and no seek, though, which she finds out when she'd realized that Spencer's locked the stall.
Glen and Aiden who have been trying to best each other in the woods finally just decide to really have at it and rumble around in the dirt. And I mean really have at it. Aiden looks like a linebacker taking Glen down like that.
Back with the Carlins, dinner's over and Clay and Ashley are playing scrabble while Paula and Arthur talk about the girl behind her back. How rude. Paula pretty much thinks the girl is trouble while Arthur, the more understanding of the two parents, doesn't think Ashley could be that harmful for their daughter. He admits that she's a little rough around the edges but Spencer might be just the fix she needs. And as he makes this point, the girl gets a triple word score on the word 'herpes'. Oh goodness.
Kelly's driven Spencer to a make-out point to of course make out but when she tries to move in on Spencer the girl jumps back like she has halitosis.

Kelly snaps off, calling her a tease, and I think she says Spencerella. I'm a bit surprised she didn't make her walk home. Meanwhile, Clay and Ashley are having a heart to heart about parents, and how they've been treated by them. They bond a little bit, even though on the surface they seem so different.
Glen and Aiden are still tussling around in the dirt when a couple of girls in a jeep drive by, lost. Gone are the boy's problems and they agree to keep any and all of the night's activities to themselves. Boys.
Spencer comes home and is about to head on upstairs when Ashley
startles her. She waited up for her. I can not do this scene any justice
on paper without quoting it all verbatim so it's a definite must see. All
you need to know is that Spencer conceded it was date, Ashley admits that
she was jealous (in a friend kind of way), and they hug a little bit longer
than necessary.
And Mama Carlin sees it all and makes Ashley sleep on the couch. Ouch!
Molding Clay or First Time
Ashley's got a video camera. And I know what you're thinking but, no, she's not making a sex tape exactly. It's actually a documentary about her friend's first times and when she asks Spencer to tell hers the girl responds with a myriad of faces. We call this The Many Faces of Spencer Carlin.

Spencer's not budging though. Ashley's gonna have to get her scoop elsewhere.
Speaking of elsewhere, Clay's dropped his books again and I think Chelsea
thinks that's hot or something because here she comes again. Hey girl, where
have you been? Anyway, she wants to congratulate Clay on getting a perfect
score on his physics exam and also maybe kinda join him if he wants to celebrate.
Okay, these two are too cute.
Aiden offers up a refusal to Ashley's first time proposal too. Her approach is all wrong, plus, Spencer asserts that people don't want something so personal on videotape. But people doesn't include Madison who is more than happy to gussy up for the camera, primping and posing as Ashley's zooms in on her a face. Her smile files shortly though because Ashley just asked her to tell them about her first time. Madison marches off in a huff and Spencer and Aiden let her know another reason why her project won't be successful. She can't go asking people in a crowd. She concedes the point, making sure to tell them that she'll talk to them later "privately."
Clay finally gathers up the nerve to ask Chelsea out, via text message, and she accepts as they exchange looks across the crowded hallway. Meanwhile, Ashley's getting her first monologue. It's Glen, only he can't remember who he had his first time with since it's been a while. Ashley smartly cuts him short.
Meanwhile, Spencer's at home on instant messenger and Aiden's telling her that he finally gave in and is gonna tell Ashley his story. Then Glen comes in and forces her off of her computer (I am so glad I'm the oldest) but she warns him not go downloading any porn. So, instead, he downloads a naked picture of Ashley. I know. Glen couldn't wait to get to school and tell Madison who doesn't seem too shocked about it. I mean, you'd think she'd be all over a naked picture of Ashley. Hmm
Ashley's about to get Aiden's first time on tape but Spencer doesn't want to hear it. Ashley tells her that she's gonna see it anyway but Spencer just tilts her head (patent) and says that she "might just want to keep the mystery alive".

I don't know if she means Aiden or Ashley but I do know that Ashley watches her walk away, then Aiden catches her watching her walk away. Awkward.
It's not nearly as awkward as Aiden's story. He's that notorious pool boy that sleeps with all the lonely wives living in suburbia, or so he says. He lost his to some old guy's third wife, but it was okay because she was hot.
Glen and Clay are chatting about Clay's pending date and Glen's trying to dispense advice when Spencer comes flying around the corner. She's coming to warn them about Ashley. She's on the prowl. Her efforts prove to be fruitless however because Glen's already did his and Clay, well Clay has nothing to tell, because it hasn't happened. Whoa. They're shocked but I kinda saw that coming.
It's later in the day and Ashley's sweating Spencer about inputting on her documentary and Spencer swats her away like a gnat. It's pretty cute though how they keep going back and forth.
Spencer: I don't think it's right to document everything that
we do. I mean, it's the privacy and intimacy that keep special moments special.
Ashley: No, you're special. That's why I love you.
Oh, you gotta tell her now Spence. Hell, I'll tell her for you. I'm just about to make something up when Aiden bumps into the girl preoccupied with his phone. I'll give you three guesses people. Naked Ashley picture has been sent to everyone, and now all those people staring at her makes sense. Ashley's usually pretty laid back, so when she gets upset about it I'm pretty shocked.
Clay's getting some more advice about his date. This time he chooses a better source: Sean. He warns Clay against going overboard on the first date. He tells him not to invest too much unless he's sure he can "seal the deal". I don't get why everyone is so sure he's gonna get "it" though. Chelsea doesn't seem like that kind of girl.
Chelsea's telling her story, because she's cool and is all about artistic expression. Oh, a kindred spirit Ashley. She lost her virginity at a prom, even though she willingly admits that she was pretty naïve about what would happen after the dance.
Sean's story is a little sad. The girl, who you can tell was someone he really cared about, ended up getting murdered. He's a tough-talking dude but he's definitely got a heart and a beautiful mind. I like him.
Paula and Arthur are heading out to a Mardi Gras themed fundraiser when Ashley shows up and she, bless her heart, asks them about their first time. Paula's face there aren't words just look.

Still, she tells the girl that she lost hers on her wedding night, and Arthur, clearly lying, states the same before Pula and he practically run out of the door.
We catch up with Clay and Chelsea who are walking along a beach, sharing stories about themselves, their lives. It's all very vanilla. In fact, yep, I think they're drinking French Vanilla roast coffee. Meanwhile Paula and Arthur are stuck in traffic and are not gonna be able to make it to that party. With nothing but time they're forced to talk to each other and Arthur asks Paula why she felt compelled to lie about their first time. She thinks that it nearly ruined their lives, he feels that it was all worth it because it got them Glen. Talk about standing on two different sides of the mirror.
Back at the Carlins, the girls are staring at Ashley's nude candid. Only Ashley lets Spencer in on a little secret. That isn't her. It's Photoshop and only one person would be diabolical enough to pull of such a thing. Madison. But the little vixen that Spencer is (who knew?) she hatches a scheme to get Madison back and judging by the grins on their faces it's gonna be a doozey.

Clay and Chelsea are getting cozy in the sand when the condom Glen slipped him falls out of his pocket. You're gonna have to explain that one big boy.

"Does that aw, shucks, sweet boy thing get you hooked up back where you come from?" she asks him, but he insists it was totally his brother's idea. And she feels compelled to believe him. He's too sweet, but, probably more than that, she knows that is a completely Glen thing to do.
Ashley's telling her first time with a girl while Spencer looks on. They're both on Spencer's bed, Spencer propped up on pillows at the head, Ashley lying on her stomach at the foot. She has her camera hooked up to Spencer's television, so as she records, Spencer can see everything she's saying on screen. This is another one of those you have to watch to get the full affect. But, Spencer's basically stealing shy glances as Ashley recounts the tale. It's not graphic or anything but it's completely intimate.

The next day at school, the girl's have planted their revenge. They've created a cardboard cut out of a naked Madison and when the Latina walks up, she almost passes out. The girls, Glen, and seemingly the entire school laugh in earnest as Madison tries to rip the cutout to shreds. Hats off, girls. That was good.
We finally get to see Spencer's "losing it" monologue. Apparently, she'd finally broken down and did one for Ashley, but we're not watching it live. We're watching it with Ashley. Spencer thought she was in love and they were both virgins, her boyfriend and her that is. She had high expectations and the experience fell way short of those and she cried afterward. Before she closes, she looks at the camera and says, "I wish I could have a new first time, with someone I really do love, who gets me. Maybe I will."

Girl's Guide to Dating
Spencer's chatting with someone on her laptop and something tells me they're not talking about their mutual love. Maybe it's the "my parents went ballistic when I told them" or the "how did you know you were?" comments that red flagged me. Before Spencer can get the answer to her burning question though, a new window pops up telling her to open her actual window. It's Romeo. Although, I'm betting she's not gonna find Leonardo DiCaprio standing down there.

It's Ashley. She's all smiles and she's got a proposition on the blonde is more than likely not gonna refuse. They're ditching and heading for the beach. I'm pretty sure that this is going to be a good day.
Clay and Glen are just moseying down the hallway when Sean runs up to greet them. He's all stoked and talking about movies because he's a major film buff. And just when his kinda cute little rant is over, an alarm sounds, and all the kids scatter about like chickens with their heads cut off. The school's going on lockdown because there may be a kid with a gun on campus. Oh dear. And, that's not gonna be where the violence ends if my spidey sense is any indication. Madison, Sean, Glen, Aiden, and Clay are all locked in together. I repeat, oh dear.
Back to the beach, Spencer and Ashley are having good old fashioned fun, laughing, chasing each other around, dragging each other into the ocean. It's goodness.
But all of their playfulness gives way to sunbathing and Spencer finally works up the courage to tell Ashley what's been on her mind.
Spencer: I think
I think I like girls.
Ashley: Like like.
Spencer: I think so but, how do I know if I'm
Ashley: Gay?
Spencer: Yeah.
Ashley: I need to process this.
If by process you mean keep looking at Spencer like that, then, by all means, process away. I understand.
Tensions boil at the school as the finger of suspicion targets various groups:
the jocks, the minorities, and the popular kids.
Back with Spencer and Ashley, Ashley's attempting to clear things up for Spencer, asking her a lot of questions to determine whether she's into girls or not. It's all pretty funny until she asks Spencer whether she looks at other girls in the locker-room, and when Spencer admits that she has, I think we have our assessment. Then a couple of shirtless guys walk by and Ashley would rather asses them. Huh?

After a brief interlude with Arthur, we find our girls at the beach enjoying the company of the two guys. Well, one girl is. The other wants to know why they're even hanging out with guys. I mean, Ashley likes
girls and Spencer thinks she likes girls. It doesn't compute. But maybe Ashley's just using this as a learning experiment for Spencer; an up close and personal look at how boys are and how she isn't. Brava, Ashley. This may work for you yet.
Arthur comes to the hospital and surprises Paula with lunch where he finds
her being a little unprofessional with an ex-boyfriend turned employer. And
apparently, she hadn't told Papa Carlin about that.

At the beach, Spencer's had enough. She was trying to have a heart to heart with Ashley but apparently the brunette would much rather "hang out with boys". Spencer's not having that and as far as she's concerned, Ashley can eat her dust. She's outta there. Spencer's stomping along, arms crossed and Ashley's driving along side of her, trying to persuade the girl to get into the car. They're arguing and a few jabs are thrown before they calm down enough to say how they really feel. Ashley just had a bad reaction to Spencer's revelation.
Still with the girls, they're walking down the beach. Spencer's telling all from how she thinks Aiden is attractive but she's invariably more interested in the girl he's with, per se. Not necessarily the girl he's with. And it scares her. But Ashley doesn't want her to be scared. She assures her that there's absolutely nothing wrong with loving who you want to love.
At King High, things have calmed down considerably. Okay, that's a lie. They're still talking about who's gonna get shot. Eventually though the crazy kids stop harping on their differences and realize that they have a lot more in common if they dig below the surface.
But this episode really and truly is not about them so back to the girls.
They're still at the beach, still talking, and Ashley's breaking down the
"Girl's Guide to Dating Girls". It's a lot similar to the "Girl's
Guide to Dating Guys" with a few cosmetic differences like an increased
wardrobe and being able to communicate easier (yeah right).Still, she doesn't
sugar coat it for Spencer. He heart can still get broken and the icing on
the cake is some people may even hate her for it.
Spencer: Screw it. I don't want to be gay.
Ashley: You don't have a choice. You are who you are Spence.
Clay, the peacemaker, has managed to bring some sense of understanding to those feuding fellow classmates of his.

But lockdown is OVA. And the kids quickly revert back to normal. Oh, to be a fickle teenager again.
Arthur is pissed. Not only had Paula neglected to tell him that she was working with her ex-boyfriend who she would have married had she not gotten pregnant with Glen those many years ago, but, she'd also relocated their entire family for this reason. I'm with Papa C, let's get her man.
Our girls are finally back at home and there's something almost palpable
in the air. Today was a major turning point for them in their friendship and
judging by the looks on these faces
they won't be friends for much longer.
Friends with Benefits
Word around campus is that there is a party to attend this weekend. Ashley and Spencer are going and they are conversing on what Ashley will wear. Then they shift to what Spencer will wear but the girl's look leaves little to be desired at times. She needs to spice up her wardrobe and Ashley has no qualms about dressing her up.

Enter Aiden, also eager about the party. He wants to know if the girls are gonna be attendance and of they are, can he tag along? He's allowed to be the third wheel, well, maybe. He and Spencer are looking a little flirty or maybe it's just gentle teasing. Whatever the case, maybe Ashley will be the odd (wo)man out this time.
Clay and Sean are talking about movies. And Clay is clueless. That should be his new nickname Clueless. He doesn't even know about the Matrix. Anyway, he's cordially invited to watch and get schooled with Sean later when/if he has the time and after Sean makes a "run".
Arthur's at home cooking, because he's progressive like that, when Paula calls him and informs him that she won't be able to make dinner. The hospital is overrun with injured people who need her. He understands, of course. So it is only gonna be him and Glen for dinner.
At Ashley's house, the girls are trying on various outfits for the party together. Meaning, at several times throughout their verbal exchange one or both of them are half naked. I have no complaints.
They're talking about Aiden, and Spencer's apparent attraction for him. The bell rings though. Aiden has arrived. He has a penchant for perfect timing. That's sarcasm for those of you who don't know.
There's a little snippet of a Clay and Sean moment. Sean's run was hanging out with his grandmother, and he teases Clay about assuming the worst.
Back at Casa de Davies, the girl has finally decided on an outfit and decides to showcase it for her friends. Their responses are far too ordinary for her though so she decides to re-evaluate, leaving the old pals alone, in her bedroom, on her bed. Aiden wastes no time in charming Spencer and she definitely is taken rather quickly. Me, I'm confused. I thought she liked girls. Well, Aiden's kinda like a girl in that he's sensitive and he listens but he's packing some extra equipment Spence, if you know what I mean. Still, she rewards him with a kiss as Ashley peeks out from her closet, a smirk on her face. What does she see that I'm not seeing?
Glen and his dad are about to watch the Cleveland Cavaliers (boo!) game and eat dinner when the game is blacked out which I'm assuming means that they can't watch it. So, Glen proposes the play simulated basketball to provide the entertainment for the evening. Amidst some playful back and forth though, we realize that Glen's a little more receptive than I thought. He wants to know what's going on with Arthur and Paula. But instead of getting to into it, Arthur boots up the video games.
Now we're back with Ashley, Spencer, and Aiden. The ASA connection if you will and Aiden and Spencer are completely flirting now, no doubt about it. Then Ashley comes back out of the closet (ha!) decked out and looking gorgeous. Spencer notices. Aiden does too.
But, the outfit won't do. She and Aiden are matching and she's trying to emphasize how they're different not alike. I think I have it now. She's playing that 'anything you can do, I can do better' game with Aiden. And at the same time, showing Spencer a taste of what she can have. Dangerous game their Ashley. It could blow up in your face. But just to make sure Spencer understands, she drags the girl away to her closet so they can chat.

And it just confuses me all over again.
Sean and Clay are taking a shortcut down an alley when they get blocked off
by a homeless guy pushing a shopping cart. The situation goes from bad to
worse though as two men approach their vehicle, guns brandished. They're jacking
them and Clay's probably clicking his heels together saying he wishes he was
back home. Poor guy. He can't catch a break.

Ashley's in outfit number three which impairs her thought process or something because before I can blink she's kissing Aiden. Spencer's as confused as I am but only for a moment because she then kisses Aiden. Then Aiden makes the somewhat boneheaded suggestion that they stay in and I say somewhat because hell yeah, I probably would too, but they're not really paying attention to him. They're too busy looking at one another.

At the hospital, Clay's shoes are being carted into the emergency room. There's been an accident and when the doctor (Dr. Montanio, Paula's ex) asks for an idea, the search turns up Clay's. Oh no!
Back at Ashley's, the girls are trading smooches with Aiden and he gets a little overeager I guess and needs a bathroom break, leaving the girls alone to do whatever it is they do. They cross the short distance to Aiden's bed and proceed to process what just happened. Spencer's not really into him and that ship has sailed for Ashley as well, so what is really going on? And here we go
Ashley: So, what about us?
Spencer: Well, when
I was kissing Aiden, I was thinking about you.
Whoa. Hell, I didn't even expect her to say that. But, it gets better ya'll.
Ashley slowly leans in, and places her hand over Spencer's cheek, whispers
an "It's okay," and, and

Aiden interrupts. OH MY GOD. He at least has the brain capacity to ask if he should leave them alone but Spencer doesn't want him to. She wants to. I don't think she likes the way it all went down. If she is gonna kiss Ashley, I don't think she wants it to also be the same night they shared Aiden.
Arthur's telling Glen as much as he can about what's going on with him and Paula when he gets a text to come pick Spencer up a.s.a.p. Meanwhile, at the ER Ben's about to break the bad news to Paula, well bad and good, the people they brought in were not Clay and Sean. It was the people who robbed them, but Clay's whereabouts are still and unknown to her.
We know that Sean and Clay are actually walking home shoeless because that's what's in the next frame and a little while after that we see them being questioned by the police, but this time the happen upon some good cops who actually give them a ride home. And even though the police are escorting him home, Spencer has one question for Clay: "What happened to your shoes?" Classic.
The shared worry over their son though has managed to bring Paula and Arthur a little closer though for the time being, and Ben is forced to look on from a distance.
Ashley's on the phone, still in her room, and Aiden's on the bed, looking remorseful. She's talking to Spencer and her tone doesn't suggest that the girl on the other end is being her usual bright and bubbly self. Aiden feels really bad for messing everything up and offers the party as a quicker picker upper, but Ashley thinks he needs to cool off. A night swim in the pool might do the trick and Aiden, after going from a whole lotta something to nothing, is quick to take anything he can get.
Under My Skin
It's King High, and it's a fundraiser for the basketball team, and they're washing cars, and Aiden is stripping.

Cool.
And hey, Ashley and Spencer are there. Aww, they worked it out. All is right with the world again. Aiden comes over in apology mode. He found his tank too. He's sorry about what happened last weekend, when he almost messed things up. But Spencer sees the experience in a different light. He helped clear things up for her.
Madison comes over trade a few blows with Ashley. It's just how they are.
But Spencer's being all sweet about it, just like she usually does. Then a
new blonde makes and appearance and she's admiring Ashley's car. And Ashley
in turn admires her. Oh my.

Ashley offers to talk the girl out on the town, show her the sights. Hey, wait, she used that same line on Spencer, who, she neglects to invite along for this outing. She probably should though, because judging by the amount of money Josie (the new girl) just stole from the carwash funds collection, she's gonna need all the backup she can get.
Sean catches up with Clay, who's being neurotic again. I can't really blame him. LA's not his cup of tea. Anyway, this time the problem is less life-threatening, to most people that is. But he has to write a social ecology term paper and the topic: "Define white society's resistance to contemporary black sang using James Baldwin's book." Sean's beside himself with possibility and Clay's distraught. You don't have to guess why.
Spencer's at lunch when Ashley strolls up and steals one of her brownies.
She drops and opening line and instead of saying anything Spencer's just silent.
Oh yes, Ashley. The silent treatment. I know it well. Ashley wants to know
what's wrong and Spencer's not reluctant to tell her, and shrink her. According
to Spencer, Ashley needs attention and she goes about getting it in the wrong
ways. But Ashley just thinks Spencer's jealous, and she really has no right
to be. "It's not like you're my girlfriend," she tells the blonde,
which quiets her down pretty quickly.

They don't part well either as Ashley stomps away and Spencer tosses something. A grape, a pea, I have no idea.
Glen and Aiden bump into each other and for once it's a somewhat cordial meeting. Aiden's looking for action and since his main girls, that would be Spencer and Ashley, are busy being angry with each other, his night is free. The proposal: game night at the Carlins where Aiden will prove once and for all that he's
better at Glen in something.
At Clay's house, he and Sean are working on his paper. Sean's dropping that knowledge on the impressionable mind of the young Carlin and a lot of what he has to say makes sense. But, just because it makes sense, it doesn't mean that Clay's teacher is gonna agree with it. Glen comes in and extends an invitation to the guys for poker night and they assure him they will be in attendance.
Ashley opens the door and leads the blonde into her bedroom. No, it's not Spencer. It's Josie, the filcher. She's carrying a plate full of food and appears to be casing the joint when she walks into Ashley's room and what makes it worse; Ashley's been buying her stuff. Ashley goes to grab Josie a drink and as soon as she's gone Jo-Jo (that's her new name) makes herself at home; taking to heart the expression what's mine is yours as she pinches Ashley's iPod, and a few CDs before calling a friend in Thailand.
Back at school, Clay catches up with Sean, thanking him for helping with his paper. He thinks he did an okay job. Meanwhile, Ashley and Spencer are about to have "the conversation". Okay, not the conversation, but one of the several big ones they are sure to have before the season finale. Ashley got detention for ditching school. Just like Spencer said she would, but Spencer doesn't care about that too much. She wants to know where Josie is. Ashley doesn't really know or care. She's more concerned about whether or not Spencer wants to hang out later, but the blonde shoots her down, still in a mood. Ashley's done making nice and again the girl's part ways after having what would seem to anyone on the outside looking in like a "lover's quarrel."
Across campus (I'm assuming) Clay ends up getting a C- on his paper and he's good vibrations are long gone now. Sean says that he should challenge the grade but Clay knows what it's about and he curses too (first time). To him, this grade just proves that he's not black enough. He feels that if he can't write a paper about being black that he's pretty much a failure and even Chelsea can't cheer him up. I'm sensing a pattern here though. We see her every third episode.
The reason Spencer turned Ashley down is because she and her mother are having a mother/daughter night out and are about to leave when Aiden and Sean show up, and Aiden leers at Spencer. Mama Carlin quickly ushers Spencer away and I'm glad. It's good to know that she's at least an equal-opportunity roadblock.
Arthur Carlin is schooling the boys in the fine game of poker, or rather, hustlers. He's wiping the floor with them.

Clay's saved though because Chelsea shows up and he readily takes his leave, preferably to apologize for being such a jerk to her earlier.
Paula and Spencer are hanging out and Paula notices the girl is being a little
withdrawn. She thinks that things have become strained with them because of
Paula's work schedule but Spencer doesn't fall for that crap. The real issue
is that Paula wants to tell her what to do, particularly when it comes to
Ashley. And, there it is, Ashley. They finally have the long-awaited conversation;
the one where Paula says that she'll try to trust Spencer more and not be
so worried about their friendship. It's a heart to heart mother/daughter moment.

Arthur has cleaned the boys out and like a true hustler he exits before they can even try to win their
money back. Man, he's worse than the casino. Glen still wants to show up Aiden but without Mr. C it probably won't be too fun.
Paula and Spencer have just made it back and we see Ashley waiting, some might even say nervously, to apologize. After Paula takes her second leave (she brought them some brownies and milk) the girls take a seat and proceed to have one of what we South of Nowhere fans affectionately call a "Spashley moment." Spashley moments must be experienced in real time so it would not do it justice to summarize or cap this scene. But, there are a few prominent lines that are definitely notable.
Spencer: I'm glad you came back tonight. I couldn't handle another nigh without
talking to you.
Ashley: Me too. I love
these brownies.
She so wasn't gonna say that. And Spencer knows it too.

Shake, Rattle, and Roll
We're in the King High girls' locker room where there are various girls in various stages of undress. In walks Ashley and Madison starts in on her right away, insinuating that Ashley is checking them out. While Ashley assures her that that isn't the case, Spencer arrives on the scene. Madison goes in for the kill, or rather, hits a hot button when she and her crony start in on Spencer and Ashley is not having that. It turns physical (and not in the good way) when Madison slaps Ashley.

And when the dust settles, and Spencer pries Ashley and Madison apart, Ashley's cell phone is lying forgotten in the corner of the locker room.
Spencer's somehow managed to drag Ashley out to a King High basketball game. Although, Ashley could probably be persuaded to do anything as long as she's doing it with Spencer. They're BFF's man. The other Carlins are also in attendance cheering on the Golden Boy a.k.a. Glen Carlin. He doesn't disappoint either making a game-saving steal and the game-winning basket.
Ashley and Spencer leave prior to the victory moment though because Ashley finally realized that she was missing her cell phone. They're looking for it in the locker room now, only there's no sign of it anywhere. Ashley's decides to check the lost and found in the coach's office, the locked coach's office, while Spencer stands by on lookout duty. Something tells me this isn't gonna end well.
Meanwhile, Glen is being showered with love and affection. From little kids to college scouts, he's all anyone can talk about. And give expensive convertibles to.

Sweet!
Spencer's still looking adorable keeping an eye out for Ashley when one of
the school security guards sneaks up on her and takes her away. Outside, Glen's
parents are telling the college scout to back off basically. This kind of
thing, although not unheard of, is totally against the NCAA's rules and regulations
for scouting and could jeopardize Glen's career entirely. But Glen doesn't
think it's their decision to make. And to make matters worse, the security
guard chooses that moment to escort Spencer by.

Spencer's in trouble. BIG trouble. The only thing she has going for her at the moment is that her parents haven't been on the same page for a while. Hence, they can't settle on a punishment. But Madison can come over for dinner, and be annoying, and all up in Glen's business about the car. This girl is so transparent at times it's scary. She reminds me of those old Bel-Air bitties. I think Spencer feels the same way because she asks to be excused, but not before being stripped of all privileges by Paula. Dayum Mrs. C. It's not like the girl was in a fight or anything. No, that would be the diva-in-training who has her claws embedded into you oldest son.
Spencer's doing some homework when her "forbidden" phone rings. (Hey, isn't that Ashley's phone? The entire cast has the same phone.) It's Ashley of course, and she wants Spencer to give up the game and let her take responsibility of her own actions. But Spencer's not budging. So, instead, we get an update on Ashley's phone. Someone's calling her from it and low and behold it's the evil one who Spencer just fled from. No, not Paula. Think shorter. And bitchier.
The next day Spencer's in her room, looking at pictures
of her and
Ashley. Aww, how cute is that? Glen comes in, looking for advice. He doesn't
feel right taking the car and eh doesn't know who he should listen to. Spencer's
kind of in that same boat. She gives him some sound advice, he should do what
he thinks is right, because at the end of the day it really doesn't matter
what everyone else thinks. It's his life and he's gonna have to live with
his decision. I actually kind of felt a brother/sister vibe there. Well done.

Clay wants to have a little chat with the gold-digger a.k.a. Madison. He wants her to back off. She's not part of their family and since she's not, she has no real say over what it is Glen does or doesn't do. But she flips it around with a quickness. "You wouldn't want Glen to think you're jealous of him because all of this is not happening to you would you?" Ooooh, cold Madison. Ice. Cold.
Arthur's in the kitchen when a cell phone goes off. It might be Spencer's, it might be Ashley's, or Sean's, but before I can guess anymore, we see that it's Paula's I hope. I would hate to think that any of the Carlin children are in some kind of an affair with Dr. Ben. The text reads "I miss you". Paula, you've got some 'splaining to do."
The next day at school, Ashley's the center of attention, but not like always. It's more or less reminiscent of that time that fake nude photo of her made the rounds. She and Aiden meet up with Clay and Sean, but it's more business than personal. Ashley wants alone time with Spencer and wants Clay to tell her when a good time for that would be. He tells her and she finally notices Sean giving her a look.

It's pretty funny but when he finds out he's not alone in his newfound knowledge of Ashley's freakiness he breaks the news. Madison has been sending messages using her phone; scandalous, salacious messages. Major no-no.
Ashley and Aiden catch up to Madison who is busy chortling and teasing with her friends when Ashley's phone goes off. She has pictures. Luckily Ashley has sources too. Sources with full access to their "forbidden" cell phone and a perfect viewing spot for looking at a driveway, where immobile, though curiously swaying, convertibles are occasionally parked. Madison is mortified to say the least and Ashley gets her phone back.
The college scout is present at one of Glen's practices and meets up with Madison and Glen afterward. Glen gives him the car back and rejects the offer for now and Madison just walks away, salty. Oh, well. It's his decision. I think he made the right one.
Ashley, phone in hand, attacks the Carlin's front door until Spencer opens it, shocked to find her there. Unfortunately though, Papa Carlin made it an early day and he's home so Ashley can't get the alone time she was hoping for or can she? Spencer sneaks the girl upstairs and they talk like usual, their playful
banter back in full swing. Then Ashley makes it serious. "I used to
think no one cared what happened to me and then I met you."

Then there was an earthquake.
The Carlins are picking up the pieces as Spencer escorts Ashley out. Even though she and her mom don't get along, Ashley's still worried about her, so she must part ways with Spencer, but not before a parting hug. Well, then. Now we're right back on track.
Say It Aint So, Spencer
Now, I think we'd all agree that Spencer has made excellent progress this season, but, the freak-out is expected. It's about as inevitable as Joan Collins' next face lift. For those of you who don't know who she is, the likelihood of her not freaking out is about as likely as a republican candidate winning the 2008 election. And, if you don't follow American politics, just know that Spencer's freak-out will happen.
Here goes nothing.
Spencer and Ashley are at school, in the washroom, fixing their faces. Spencer's mom is stealing her make-up which Ashley thinks means she's having an affair. Spencer laughs that off and Ashley offers her some lips gloss. It's perfect for kissing girls because it's clear. This whole banter is bordering on flirtatious.

Spencer: Aww, now you have me wearing your shade. How convenient?
Just in case we end up in some spontaneous lip lock.
Ashley: Trust me. It won't be spontaneous.
But this whole conversation is overheard by Madison and her minion, and she thinks it's her persona mission to not only hurt Ashley, but to "save" Spencer. Who would've thought? Madison's a devout Catholic? She is so gonna get it.
Clay has some news for Chelsea and Sean. He's found his birth mom and she's
"willing" to meet him. That's his wording and I wouldn't get too
excited there pal if those are the words she used. Sean's kind of wary too,
but Clay's a little too enthused to be thwarted.
Madison didn't waste much time in prepping her story for Glen. She catches up to him in the quad and expresses her "concern." Glen immediately confronts Spencer and when the girl doesn't outright deny it, like he expected, he's ready to go and tell the parentals. Spencer's angry that he would chose sides over family but she still doesn't deny the claim, because it's true so I'm giving her a LOT of credit.

But now, she's freaked. She and Ashley are in her bedroom and she's pacing a.k.a. freaking out. I told you it was inevitable. And it only gets worse when Ashley's tongue slips.
Ashley: Listen, it's Madison, okay? She hates me. Of course she's gonna try and use this to break us up.

Oops.
If Spencer was freaking out before, then that just sent her over the edge. She doesn't know what they are but she just needs time to figure that out. But Ashley's hurt now. And when she's hurt, she runs.
Ashley: You know what, I'm sorry that this is just so terrible for you. But
what hurts even more is the fact that, you don't want anyone to think it's
true; even if it is a lie.
Arthur and Paula are also having trouble in paradise. He thinks she's shacking
up with Ben. So, at last count that was: Ashley, Arthur, and
me, yeah
me. Three people think she's an adulterer.
The next day at school, Glen's waiting for Ashley. He's full of boldness and he wants her to lay off Spencer. She's not gay. Ashley only wants to know if Spencer sent him, if not, then he could leave her the heck alone. Spencer knows what and who she wants. But he's a persistent dude if anything.
Glen: And if you really care about her you'll back off.
Sadly, you can tell Ashley took these words to heart. Let's just hope it won't be too much of a problem.
I don't think Glen knows his words sunk in with Ashley because he's still
scheming to "straighten out" Spencer. This time, he cajoles Aiden
into asking the girl out on a date. He's so desperate to "fix" Spencer
that he's enlisting the help of his arch nemesis. He's definitely Paula's
kid. Aiden's no idiot though. He jumps all over the opportunity and in no
time is chatting up a still emotionally reeling Spencer, who, without much
hesitation agrees to go out on a date with him.
Madison corners Ashley in the bathroom and happily informs the girl that "her girl" is going out with Aiden Saturday, which Ashley doesn't believe at first, but sadly, it's true, and sadly, Ashley can't pretend not to be bothered by that news. Man, she's having the worse day.
So, it's Spencer and Aiden's date, and can I just say, I heart him. He's so I dunno, receptive, but he can totally tell that with him is not where Spencer wants to be. He tries to tell her too but she's not ready to hear it yet. She is however ready to try and kiss him again. Let's hope she doesn't pass out or puke this time. Or maybe, let's hope that she does.
Ashley's at Gray, alone. Glen, Madison, Chelsea, and Clay are all there but even a Madison verbal beat down couldn't cheer her up now. Spencer's out with Aiden and that has her bummed. Kat, the bartender, tries to help her out.
Ashley:
She told me she likes girls. I know she likes me. I
just don't get it, what happened?
Kat: It's a big step. Give her some time. Eventually, love trumps fear.
Every time.
Clay gets a call from Sean while he's hanging out with Chelsea. Sean's cousin, Boz, he's been hurt and the hospital Clay's mom works at is refusing him service because he doesn't have insurance. Sean's hoping that his boy might be able to help them out. Cut to Arthur and Paula. In an attempt to re-capture the magic, they try have a night to only themselves but it's about to be cut short. Clay needs them.
Back to Aiden and Spencer. The guy can't help it. He's one of the few good
ones and he keeps asking Spencer if she's sure she wants to do this, be here
with him. She gets a little upset, not angry, just sad and she and him have
a moment.
He's a pretty supportive guy, and just tells her that hiding from herself will only make things more difficult for her. "You are who you are." Hmm, someone else said that on this show. I think it was at a beach.
Ashley's got a stalker, and she looks like a bird. I didn't say an unattractive
bird so don't hit me. I'm just saying. I saw her and instantly thought "bird".
Anyway, they make a little small talk, and, since Ashley's a little wasted
(and a lot heartbroken) she doesn't mind the extra attention.

Arthur and Paula can not find the groove and that's all I have to say about that. I know they're not my parents but they're Spencer's and *shudders* I just don't even want to think about that.
Back at Gray, Ashley and I didn't catch her name, are very touchy feely. That girl's lucky Spencer isn't there. She might pop her one. Instead, they head off to Ashley's face with a bag full of "party favors" and intent do any and all behaviors deemed indecent by the FAA. Uh oh.
Spencer and Aiden are heading back home after their "date" when she decides to check in and simultaneously clear the air with Ashley, but when she dials her friend, Bird-chick answers the phone. Now, Spencer needs to head over to Ashley's because knowing her, she's picked up another drifter. One of these days, one of those girls will be homicidal.
Fast-forward a scene because these are short summaries and this is already too long, Bird girl is rifling through Ashley's belongings, and is about to pocket some cash when Spencer catches her in the act. Before the girl takes her leave though, she informs Spencer that Ashley talked about her all night, even though she refused to talk to her when she called.
When the girl is gone for good, Spencer takes a seat on Ashley's bed, waking the girl up with an apology. She freaked out. Uh, no. Really?
Spencer: I didn't want to deal with being gay, but I couldn't deal with not being with you.
Wow, she's so on top of how she feels. And she's only a teenager. Imagine
what she'll be like as an adult. Ashley tells Spencer that she's not the best
when it comes to relationships, only she uses a lot less words, but Spencer
thinks they'll be okay.
I think so too.

What Just Happened?
The scene opens in Ashley's house. In Ashley's bedroom. With Spencer and Ashley in the bed together.

Ashley apparently is surprised that Spencer stayed. And she looks like crap.
But Spencer doesn't mind, because she likes taking care of Ashley and that's
definitely a good sign. But before we can delve too deeply into things, Christine
makes her presence known. (And trust me, that woman does have a presence.)
She's leaving for the weekend and she reams Ashley for bringing home these
quote unquote friends. And she's to list these friends and their transgressions.
Spencer's visibly uncomfortable with the topic of conversation. I wonder why.
Christine takes her leave after dropping a few bills on Ashley's bed. But
Spencer has a few burning questions for the girl as well. Like did she really
sleep with all those girls? But Ashley says that's just the tip of the iceberg.
That might not have been the right thing to say.
So Spencer finally makes it back home even though she was supposed to be home
last night. Glen was shocked to find out she was with Ashley when his plan
was for her to be with Aiden. His scheming didn't pan out. So Paula's been
freaking out because she didn't know where the girl was. And then it only
escalates when she finds out she was with Ashley. Spencer seems a little nonchalant
about the whole thing, which pisses Mama C off more. And when she forbids
Spencer to see Ashley forever (forever ever? Forever ever?) Spencer contends
that she won't be able to prevent that, she's never home. That's when Paula
smacks that crap out of her.
DAMN!
The next day at school. Spencer must have got away because Ashley's driving
her. And as they're walking, Ashley grabs her hand with the pretense of checking
her lifeline because she wants to know if she'll be around for a while.

It's a total 'aww' moment but it's interrupted by La Chica Loca. Spencer
shrugs her comments off but Ashley takes it more to heart when it's usually
the other way around. What's up with that?
Clay and Chelsea are walking down a crowded hallway, just chatting about basically
nothing. But Clay is a little preoccupied with something else; he called his
birth mom. He's thinking about going to see her
but Chelsea cautions him against high expectations. She's a totally good
girlfriend.
Glen's got the news for Madison. He's talking to some university guy, and
they're offering him a full ride. (Scholarships in case you were wondering.)
And Madison doesn't look too excited about it. She thinks that he'll end up
just leaving her behind or at least that's what she says. Upon further inspection
we realize that the gold digger's intent is to manipulate the young Carlin
into marriage. What?! Is this girl really in high school? Because that's just
crazy.
Ok, we're back with Spencer and Ashley. They're talking about parents and
how weird Spencer's are being. Ashley assures her that it's not her, it's
them. They have their own issues to work out. And until then, Spencer shouldn't
worry too much about it. The blonde breaks out the head tilt (patent) and
gives the brunette a hug in which she freezes up on. Uh, mixed signals much?
Clay and Sean are visiting Boz in the hospital. He's still pretty banged
up from the previous episode. We haven't seen him in a while. Well, I wonder
what he's been up to, aside from getting beat up that is. As they're leaving
Clay asks to borrow Sean's car to go meet his birth mom. Sean gives him the
same warning as Chelsea but something tells me Clay isn't taking their advice
seriously.
At Gray, it's another ASA connection (and for those of you who haven't been
reading my summaries that's an Aiden, Spencer, Ashley trifecta). Ashley's
being aloof and distant with Spencer. Which is out of the ordinary these days.
Spencer wants to know what the deal is. She's finally ready to take that leap
with Ashley but it seems like Ashley's pushing her away. Ashley doesn't have
any real answers but when Aiden suggests that they straighten out we get to
the heart of the problem. Ashley doesn't want Spencer
to go through the same drama she does for being gay. But Spencer's past the
'just friends' stage and she doesn't think that she can go backwards, she
wants to go forward. It's up to Ashley to decide what she wants to do.
Next day at school, we see Ashley and Aiden walking together. She needs advice
about what to do with Spencer. Aiden's a real smart guy when it comes to relationships
even thought every girl on the show thus far has left him one way or another.
He hits the nail on the head, Ashley's just scared. She's really vulnerable
and for the first time she feels like she's in a position where someone can
break her heart.
I agree with Ashley, he would make a great girl.
Aiden's full of advice today. And he has some for Glen: Madison is crazy.
But it's something they have to deal with, because she's hot. Glen's still
stressed though, so he joins a pick-up game. He needs to let off some steam.
Clay, in the meantime, has finally made it to the desert where he's about
to meet his mom for the first time who turns out to be Vanessa Huxtable. Her
name is actually Cecily and they engage in a little small talk before the
conversation turns intense. He wants to know why she gave him up. And when
he finds out why, those expectations come crumbling down.
Spencer's talking to her dad and it's clear she's talking around something.
I think he knows what she's getting at but he's still super awesome so he
plays supportive Dad really well.

At the end of their heart-to-heart, the doorbell rings. Wonder who that could
be. Arthur opens the door to reveal Ashley. She looks timid maybe a little
nervous. And if Arthur didn't know for sure before, he definitely knows now.
Glen's being wheeled into the ER. He injured himself in that pick-up game,
possibly ending his basketball career.
After the montage fades, we see Spencer and Ashley in Spencer's living room
on the couch. Ashley apologizes for being so hot and cold with Spencer. And
Spencer wants to know why she'd do that. Ashley finally breaks down and tells
her what's really been bothering her. "I want you, but I don't want to
hurt you." Spencer assures her that she's more than capable of taking
care of herself and Ashley. That's when Ashley invites Spencer over for the
weekend. It's about time.
Everybody's in reflective mode. Or not. We pretty much see where everybody's
at, at the end of the season. Clay's in his car, hopes for reconciliation
with his birth mom dashed.
Glen's being dumped by Madison, obviously she has no need for him now.
Paula finds a shoulder to lean on with Dr. Montanio while Arthur drowns his
sorrows in whiskey.
Madison doesn't waste any time finding Aiden at Gray. He is the next best
thing after all.
And now, drum rolls please, the final scene, Ashley's bedroom door opens and
in comes her and Spencer. She leans onto the couch, pulling Spencer closer
to her and they share their first kiss. It's a nice one, too.

But that's not it folks, Ashley leads Spencer to the bed and the scene fades
to black as they lie down together.
Well, there you have it. Season one of the-N's original series South of Nowhere.
Greatness, right?
